Stock Characters

Stock Characters

Group Session

Members should read the post ‘ Pitching a character’ on the blog before the session, ‘Stock Characters’ and remind them to feel free to click on related tags and links for further advice.

Look at the list of expressions often used in descriptions of stock characters, or stereotypes, below and mentally note your first impression, what they bring to mind in terms of what you think the character would be like, what kind of story you might meet them in………

Tall, dark and handsome                                                                                               Busty blonde
Wizened old man                                                                                                             Precocious child
Shifty looking character                                                                                                   Evil eyed monster
Subservient underling                                                                                                     Nosey neighbour
Greasy haired runt                                                                                                           Blustering, self important nobody
Stunner                                                                                                                              Fresh faced youth

Choose three and elaborate, create a character based on each; write about 100 words about each one as they would appear in a story. Introduce them to the reader as you would in a story; remember we may learn about them from what they do and how they behave, we do not want to find ourselves writing boring descriptions of ‘static photographs’.

If you have another idea that you would like to include then choose two from the list and one of your own.

Allow about 20 minutes

Discuss which characters were chosen and ask members to read out their character sketch.

Compare particularly the results from the same choices. Note good examples of characterisation.

Ask members to write a short story using at least two of the characters from the list.

Allow 15 – 20 minutes

Share and discuss briefly and/or, if necessary finish for homework.
